The self portrait Index was created specifically for my presentation during the Transart Institute Winter Residency 2015 in New York City. The intent of this piece was to give the viewers of my presentation the opportunity to experience, if just a little, the tactility of the journal pages which were being viewed, handled and held by Claire Barratt in their presence, yet out of their sight and touch at the front of the presentation area. The piece is a scaled down version of Just Between Me and You. It consisted of approximately 100 index card size mixed media pieces, each with its own brown paper envelope upon which I have stamped on the front where the address might be "YOU", and on the back flap where a return address might be "ME". The envelopes were housed in a small document file box, similar to the boxes used for Just Between Me and You and Look In Glass. Part of the presentation was the distribution of the envelopes to the viewers. I invited everyone to take one as a gift or memento from me to them. They could either keep it private, or share it with others. I do not know where the cards have landed. Some are still in the box. The images in this gallery show the finished piece in the studio along with a photo of one of the cards in the hand of a viewer after the presentation. An envelope has recently appeared in a collage from another artist.
