Returning to mirrors and iPhone photos of myself I began a body of work about just that, the body. Or in this case, my body. As the title of my first year project Self Portrait of a Female with Epilepsy, it is for me a logical next step after having begun exploring my image of self in relation to my paintings in the mirror portraits of Self Reflective to begin exploring the image I have of my own body. Using a single mirror, pressing various parts of my body against the mirror, holding the iPhone at odd angles, using minimal editing of the image, I am offering a group of self portraits which are at times very recognizable and revealing in their origins, at other times they fall into an abstraction which can only hint at what might be hidden within the image. I have not dedicated a separate gallery to this group of works at this time, instead choosing to post them in this process gallery as I am not sure how, where or what they will lead to. Perhaps they will be developed into either a separate work in the Self Portrait series, become parts of another work of that series, or remain part of a 'digital sketchbook' researching the image of myself and my relationship to it.
have begun trying out various approaches to these images in sketchbooks and paintings. Please visit the M501/502 Sketchbook gallery and the M501/M502 Studio Process gallery to view these explorations.
