“measure twice, cut once” - a wise, old carpenter
“Be prepared.” - Robert Baden-Powell
The purpose of this post is to prepare website visitors for their role as audience at my Summer Residency 2018 presentation by helping them to formulate questions they will be asked to provide in the opening minutes. My intention with each presentation I have given during Transart residencies has been for the presentation to provide knowledge which becomes in turn part of my research process. I maintain, the role of the audience is analogous to the spectators of performances or exhibitions, or the readers of the writing, and this must be actively performed. The impetus for my position is philosopher Richard Wollheim’s description of the relationship between the artist, the object, and the spectator, and how this relationship makes painting as an art (Wollheim, 1987). In all points of this triangular relationship I uphold the necessity of active participation to make this research as creative research. Therefore, I am asking you, the audience/spectator/reader of this post, to take time to familiarize yourself with the content linked to below - how much time you take or how deeply you engage is up to you, consider what questions have arisen for you, and bring them to the presentation. If you would prefer emailing me your questions please send to robyn@art-robynthomas.com.
First, I recommend reviewing the three most recent residency presentations. In these postings you will find my research questions. These postings contain videos of the presentation portions only (no Q & A) but if you prefer a quicker means by which you familiarize yourself with what I have done so far the notes and the slides are contained in these postings as well.
Second, I direct you to postings documenting the process of the two works I will discuss in my presentation. Do not fear - most of these postings are short and more image than text! It is up to you how much time you spend with each posting.
